Question:

Q: Dr. Destler:

As an avid, self proclaimed environmentalist, I try to make myself aware of ways I can help better the environment as well as spreading that word to others. As I sat in the SAU and ate lunch, and in the SAU lobby after lunch, I could not help but notice the large number of students (and faculty) simply ignoring the recycling bins. Student and faculty continuously deposited recyclables in the waste receptacle.

I know RIT is participating in RecycleMania and has put more recycling bins around campus since I was a freshman in 2005, but I was wondering if RIT has plans to do more. Making recycling accessible is only part of the solution. I have seen, in my mind, very little effort to educate the RIT community about recycling outside of Earth Day specific activities.
A: A comprehensive advertising campaign is being developed by a recycling student working in Facilities Management for implementation in the Fall, 2009. In addition, FMS participates in freshman orientation where we advertise and promote our campus recycling program.

Along with the increased emphasis on promotion and advertising, a significant number of additional recycling containers will be purchased and placed around the academic side of campus prior to the start of fall classes.
